The number one mistake of entrepreneurs make is believing they can do it all themselves (I’ll show you the budding entrepreneurs says). Jokes aside, the tax-code is very friendly to businesses as they are essential for a functioning society. There are many tax advantages for business owners.
For example, most new businesses usually get the help of family members to turn their business into a well-oiled machine. It is legal to pay your family members to work in your business and deduct profits as wages. But the onus is on you, the owner, to keep proper documentation of the work completed and wages paid. There’s more flexibility with hiring family and it’s easier to manage. This is completely legal as long as you treat it as if you were actually hiring a stranger. You should be able to prove to the CRA that the amounts paid were in the pursuit of business profit, amount paid was reasonable, and the work was actually performed by the family member.
